Plants Talk: Nurturing Growth In The Nursery

Insider

Today, we’re growing lettuce! It may not sound that exciting, but we’re growing the biggest, greenest, healthiest heads of lettuce that you can find. We’ve shown you how the process starts, with the seed. But what happens after? Well, for us, we nurture the growth of our baby plants, called seedlings, in our nursery. Come along and let’s see how our seedlings are doing.

Hi I’m Michelle Keller, Head Grower at Living Greens Farm. It’s only been 72 hours since we’ve planted our seeds in our rock wool sponges and the plants have begun to sprout.

It’s important that our seedlings are kept in a temperature-controlled environment to encourage strong growth, but it’s more than just the temperature that helps our plants thrive. We aren’t restricted by mother nature, and because we grow indoors, we can control the conditions and spray a nutrient-rich mist directly to the plants roots exactly when they need it.

The Perfect Recipe

Using the perfect recipe of essential nutrients, water, and light, we can forecast just how much these plants will grow, and how quickly too! In a very short time, these tiny little seedlings will be ready to transplant into our grow rooms, where we use vertical grow racks to help them grow into healthy, strong plants.  This is what gives our produce the crisp texture you can’t get in outdoor-grown crops, where plants have to use more energy to find the water, and the nutrients they need, when they need it.

It won’t be long for these seedlings to be ready for transplant. In our next video, we’ll show you how we transplant from our nursery into the grow rooms. Be sure to subscribe to our blog and follow us on social media for more updates.
